Application for Postgraduate Admission

Prospective candidates for admission to postgraduate studies in the University should apply on the prescribed application form. Request for form should be addressed to The Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies and should be accompanied by an application fee of N1,500 made payable to the University of Nigeria.

Application fee could be paid by bank draft or by cash for candidates wishing to collect the form from the Nsukka or Enugu Campus Office of the School of Postgraduate Studies or the University Liaison Office, Lagos.

Foreign students requesting for form should enclose application fee in acceptable foreign currency, which is equivalent to the application fee. Forms shall be sent on request to applicants from EEC countries or the U.S.A but such applicants must return their completed application forms with the correct application fee.

Personal cheques, Postal or Money Orders are not acceptable. Except the cases specified above, any other requests for application form not accompanied by the prescribed application fee shall not be honoured.

Nigerians applying for forms should each enclose a self-addressed and stamped large envelope measuring 35.5cm x 22.5cm for mailing the form to them.

When to Apply
Candidates are admitted once in a year for Postgraduate Diploma and Master’s Degree Programmes, that is, at the beginning of the first semester which begins in September. Doctoral admissions are conducted twice in a session at the beginning of each semester, in September and in April.

Candidates applying for September admission must obtain the application form between January and March 30 of the same year.
Prospective students would be issued with an Information Handbook at no extra cost.

The Information Handbook contains:

• General information about the University
• Available postgraduate programmes
• Method of application for postgraduate admissions

Postgraduate programme advertisement is usually published in December/January in the newspapers.

Ph.D Candidates
Those who wish to obtain a form for April Ph.D. admission should do so between October and December30 of the previous year.
Candidates must note that the date the issue of forms closes is the same as the date for the submission of completed application forms and all the accompanying documents.

Accompanying Documents include:
• Referees Reports
• Copies of qualifying certificates, etc

Completing Application Form
Candidates should supply clear and correct responses to the information elicited in the application form. Candidates should also sign the declaration in Section 20 of the form.
While returning the form, candidate must enclose:
• Two recent passport photographs of himself/herself. One of the photographs should be pasted at the appropriate space in the inside front cover of the form;
• A statement of not more than 180 words of the desired field of study;
• Photocopies of all certificates claimed including NYSC discharge or exemption certificate (for Nigerians only);
• Completed application form must be returned in a good file jacket with the candidate’s name, form number, Department of choice, degree in view (e.g. M.Sc. and proposed field of study clearly marked on it.)
Closing Date for Submission of Completed Application Forms
Completed application forms for September admissions together with the necessary documents must reach the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies not later than March 31 of the year for which the admission is sought. Ph.D. candidates applying for April admission must ensure that their completed application forms and the requisite documents are received by the Secretary not later than December 30 of the previous year.

Academic Year
The University academic year or session consists of two semesters. The first semester normally spans from the beginning of October to March with mid-semester break in December. The second semester runs from April to July.

Referee
Candidates should give the referee report forms to each of the three referees named in the application form. The referees are to mail their reports direct to the Dean, School of Postgraduate Studies. Candidates are advised to also give to each of their referees a stamped referee’s report. Completed referees reports must reach the School on or before that last date for the submission of completed application form.
Transcript
Candidates should request their former Universities/Institutions to send their academic and professional certificate transcripts to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies after paying the appropriate transcript transfer fee. Graduates of the University of Nigeria should also cause their transcripts to be so transferred. Student copy of transcript is not acceptable.

Candidates are advised to apply early enough for their transcripts to be transferred from their former institutions to the Secretary, School of Postgraduate Studies to reach him not later than 30 April of the year of application. Application for transcript should be made before the completion of application form. The applications of candidates whose transcripts have not reached the School before the above date will not be considered.

Candidates must ensure that their official transcripts are received from their former Universities or Colleges before April 30. No candidate will be offered admission if his/her official transcript is not available at the time of consideration of his/her application.

Availability of Supervisor
The Department is usually expected to assign an approved supervisor to every candidate as a condition for admitting such candidate into postgraduate programme of the University. Candidate shall not be admitted into a programme if no supervisor is available for him or her.

Request for Change of the Information Given in the Application Form
A request from an applicant for postgraduate admission for change of any information supplied in his/her application form including change of department, change of field of study, change of address, etc., must reach the Secretary not later than May 30 of the year in which the admission is sought.

Request for change coming after the above date will not be considered. Request for the deferment of admission will not be accepted except on the condition stated in Section 24(c)(ii) of the Postgraduate Studies Regulations.
